Are “empty” tanks hazardous?
Empty above-ground storage tanks can still be considered be hazardous. Review Appendix C of OSHA’S 29 CFR 1910-146 to find examples of empty tanks causing a hazardous event:
- Welding in and near tanks igniting flammable vapors
- Tanks without sufficient oxygen (less than 19.5%) can cause a dangerous work environment, with the chance of asphyxiation.
