When to replace an aboveground storage tank

Indicators that a steel tank needs replacement include corrosion on the tank’s bottom, seams, welds, and piping. Are “empty” tanks hazardous?

Empty above-ground storage tanks can still be considered be hazardous. Review Appendix C of OSHA’S 29 CFR 1910-146 to find examples of empty tanks causing a hazardous event:

  • Welding in and near tanks igniting flammable vapors
  • Tanks without sufficient oxygen (less than 19.5%) can cause a dangerous work environment, with the chance of asphyxiation.
